This just seems like a bad idea. Once the heat is absorbed by the water, where does the water go? Back into the sea / ocean / lake / whatever? Then our bodies of water gradually rise in temperature, thereby altering our ecosystem. This is a major problem.

Furthermore, though less likely and on a smaller scale, as more and more companies do this, the addition of myriad inputs/outputs could disrupt the local life as man-made currents are added into the system, and the overall water level could be depleted (even if the majority of the water is eventually returned to its source).

This is not a sustainable strategy.
