The American Dream (Response)

Prompt

Answer/respond to the following (based on the readings) then as usual, respond the posts of at least 3 classmates.

The American Dream is nothing more than a myth, it may have been viable 50 years ago but this no longer is true.

Classmate’s post

I believe the American dream was outsourced during the eighties. The idea of becoming prosperous through ones abilities and hard work is a thing of the past.American workers are having difficulties finding good paying jobs and when they do they can’t count on them being around forever. With american industry outsourcing blue and white collar jobs over seas no one is immune to the possibility of being jobless.

Many psychologist believe that children develop the ability to determine right from wrong during the ages of seven to fifteen. I think this is true unless, there is some kind of mental impairment.Teenagers know that murder is wrong and should fear the consequence of taking someones life. If a teen kills they should be tried and sentenced just like a adult. To many teen criminals don’t see prison as a terrible place but, they may think twice about committing a senseless act if death is the punishment.

People who are involved in religious, political or ideological fanaticism are mentally ill and should be treated as such. They are easy prey for the powerful and can be sheep led to the slaughter.

Response

Outsourcing can be viewed both positively and negatively. you have outlined the negative view of outsourcing so I shall counter with more optimistic insights into this `trend’.

From a global perspective, out-sourcing provides equal opportunity to all individuals, regardless of political and social barriers. This comes back to our previous discussions on entitlement; we as Americans feel entitled to the luxuries associated with the American Dream, whereas “outsiders” are willing to work harder and for less to reach their goals. If Americans cannot compete globally, then we should step up our game. Look at our educational system; our top (and middle) tier schools are overflowing with people from other nationalities. These people are willing to work diligently to be placed in such institutions whereas in the metropolitan areas of the U.S., attending such schools is considered to be the norm. As another vantage, look to the unemployed and/or homeless portion of our society. Many healthy and able individuals would rather use government funding or beg passer-by than to get a job.

Furthermore, there is no need to count on a job as “being around forever”. The strength of humankind is in our adaptability. Out-sourcing us requires us to adapt to competition from around the globe. Supply and demand will couple with Darwinism to show who shall survive in this new globally-competitive marketplace.
