College Graduates’ Entitlement (Response)

Prompt

Talk about entitlement. Is it a right, a priviledge, or are you entitled to have your college education paid for by your parents? When it comes to working aroud the house, mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, doing laundry, is this your mother and or father’s job? Have an opinion, write about and respond to this from any point of view you like.

… Entitlement is a strong word, but when I see people I work with feel as if they are entitled to jobs simply beacause they graduated, it makes me upset. Does getting a college education entitle one to a job? Or is there more to it? Comments and thoughts are appreciated.

Response

I’ll reiterate my position in previous posts: nothing in life is guaranteed. Education doesn’t end with college; work doesn’t end once you have a degree. Asking for a job based merely upon holding a degree is akin to expecting a job because you showed up for the interview. So what? There are numerous individuals in your position; there is always someone to beat; you have to work harder than them to maintain your position. If you’re not progressing, you’re stagnant, and if you’re stagnant, then you’re falling behind.
